Kano, Nigeria – In a major anti-smuggling operation, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted over $1.1 million in undeclared cash at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport. The massive haul, suspected to be part of an illicit financial flow scheme, was seized during routine security checks on departing passengers.
According to customs officials, the intercepted foreign currency was concealed in luggage and failed to meet the legal declaration requirements mandated by Nigerian and international financial regulations. Authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the source, intended destination, and individuals involved in the operation.
The Kano airport, a known transit hub for international travelers, has been under increased surveillance amid rising concerns over money laundering, currency trafficking, and other illicit financial activities. Officials warn that such unregulated cash movements pose a significant threat to Nigeria’s economic stability and efforts to curb financial crimes.
Customs authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to tightening security at all entry and exit points across the country, emphasizing that individuals caught violating currency declaration laws will face the full weight of the law.
