House of Reps Moves to Strip Immunity from Top Government Officials

In a bold move to tackle corruption and promote accountability, the House of Representatives has passed the second reading of a constitutional amendment bill aimed at removing immunity for the Vice President, Governors, and their Deputies. This historic legislation, if passed, would ensure that top public officials can be held accountable for their actions while in office, marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s fight against corruption.

For years, the immunity clause has shielded these high-ranking officials from prosecution, often allowing corruption and abuse of power to thrive unchecked. By pushing for its removal, lawmakers argue that the bill will serve as a deterrent against impunity, ensuring that those entrusted with leadership positions are subject to the same legal standards as ordinary citizens.

While the proposal has sparked debates, with some cautioning against possible political witch-hunts, many Nigerians see it as a necessary step toward a more transparent and accountable government. As the bill progresses, all eyes will be on the National Assembly to see if this reform will finally become law.
