Italy is moving forward with plans to integrate nuclear energy into its long-term energy strategy, as Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government seeks to align the country with other European nations prioritizing both nuclear power and renewable energy sources. Speaking at the Ambrosetti Forum, Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani underscored the importance of adopting nuclear energy to meet climate targets and safeguard Italy's future economic stability.
Tajani warned that excluding nuclear, alongside gas and coal, from Europe's energy mix could lead to severe economic decline, labeling such an approach as a potential path to self-destruction. He highlighted that nuclear energy, paired with renewables, is essential for a realistic and balanced energy policy.
Italy’s shift comes as several European Union countries—including France, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Poland—have already ramped up efforts to expand their nuclear capabilities. As Italy joins the ranks of these nations, the Meloni government looks to secure the country’s energy independence while contributing to Europe’s overall climate and sustainability goals.
