TikTok Deletes Over 3.6 Million Videos in Nigeria, Expands Safety Tools and Local Support

In a strong move to reinforce its commitment to user safety, TikTok has announced that over 3.6 million videos were removed from its platform in Nigeria between January and March 2025. This figure, revealed in the platform’s latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report, represents a 50% increase compared to the previous quarter—signaling a major step forward in TikTok’s enforcement and moderation efforts within the country.

This rise in content removals is driven by TikTok’s continued investment in advanced technology and expert moderation systems. Impressively, 98.4% of the videos taken down were detected before any user reported them, and 92.1% were removed within 24 hours of posting. The platform's proactive measures are aimed at maintaining a safe, respectful, and empowering digital environment for millions of Nigerian users.

In addition to video removals, TikTok has ramped up enforcement on its LIVE feature. More than 42,000 LIVE rooms were banned and over 48,000 streams interrupted in Nigeria in Q1 2025 due to guideline violations. This follows new clarifications around LIVE Monetization Guidelines, ensuring that only appropriate content receives monetization opportunities.

Globally, TikTok removed more than 211 million videos in Q1 2025, with automation accounting for over 184 million. This global enforcement is a reflection of the platform’s increasingly effective detection technologies, with less than 1% of all content found to be in violation of its guidelines.

To further strengthen its local support system, TikTok is rolling out in-app helplines in Nigeria in collaboration with Cece Yara, a child-focused non-profit organisation that provides expert support on issues related to harassment, hate, self-harm, and suicide. This follows the success of a similar program piloted in Europe.

At the recent “My Kind of TikTok Digital Well-being Summit,” TikTok also announced the appointment of Nigerian doctor and wellness advocate Dr. Olawale Ogunlana—popularly known as Doctor Wales—as a TikTok Digital Well-being Ambassador. He joins a network of verified global health experts working with the platform to promote digital safety.

As part of its broader efforts, TikTok continues to drive education through initiatives like the #SaferTogether campaign, which calls on the community to join in building a safer and more supportive digital space.
