Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has ordered the Heads of Local Government Administration (HLGAs) to immediately assume control of all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) following the expiration of the tenure of elected council chairmen.
The directive comes pending the conduct of fresh elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
This move follows recent political tensions in the state and the Supreme Court ruling that sacked LGA chairmen. It is expected to temporarily fill the leadership vacuum at the local government level until a new democratic process is conducted.
Governor Fubara's decision has sparked mixed reactions, with supporters praising it as a move to restore order, while critics argue it could escalate ongoing political conflicts in the state.
The coming days will be crucial as stakeholders await further announcements from RSIEC on the election timeline.
