EU Considers Banning Russian LNG and Aluminum Imports as Part of 16th Sanctions Package

The European Union is reportedly planning to ban imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and aluminum from Russia as part of its 16th package of sanctions against the country, according to sources cited by Bloomberg. The proposed measures aim to increase economic pressure on Russia amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.

In addition to the bans on LNG and aluminum, the EU is considering restrictions on dozens of vessels from Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.” These ships are allegedly involved in circumventing existing sanctions. Furthermore, the package is expected to include enhanced export controls on goods with potential military applications.

The sanctions could also lead to the disconnection of additional Russian banks from the international SWIFT payment system, further isolating Russia’s financial sector.

According to Bloomberg’s sources, the restrictions on aluminum imports are likely to be implemented gradually, though the timeline and specific volumes have not yet been finalized.

Analysts believe that these measures, if adopted, will significantly impact Russia’s economy, especially its energy and industrial sectors. The sanctions are also expected to intensify the EU’s shift toward alternative energy sources and suppliers.
