Former Nigerian presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed his sympathy for the Super Eagles following their distressing experience in Libya, where the team was reportedly abandoned at a remote airport while en route to the Morocco 2025 AFCON Qualifier return leg.
In his statement, Obi described the situation as “highly regrettable,” highlighting the unfair treatment the players and officials endured, which led to their decision to return home. The match was subsequently delisted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).“Like every patriotic Nigerian, I sympathize with our Super Eagles over their ordeal in Libya. Their decision to return home is justified, and I commend their patience and patriotism despite the neglect,” Obi said.
While awaiting the outcome of the investigation ordered by CAF, Obi urged the Super Eagles to remain focused and not allow the incident to dampen their zeal. Instead, he encouraged them to channel the experience into motivation for future matches, including their eventual goal of qualifying for the Morocco 2025 AFCON and winning the championship.
He added, “In these challenging times for Nigeria, a victory by the Super Eagles would not only unite the country but also give Nigerians something to celebrate.”Obi also called on Nigerians to use this incident as a reminder to work harder towards restoring the nation’s dignity on the global stage. He concluded by expressing hope for a brighter future under the right leadership, emphasizing that “a new Nigeria is possible.”
